What "genuine leather" actually means
Real leather is graded in tiers, and genuine leather sits at the base of that grading, not the top. Full-grain is the highest tier, taken from the outermost layer of the hide with the natural grain intact, and it develops a rich patina and holds up for decades with care.
Top-grain is the next tier down, sanded smooth for a more uniform look, still strong, just less rugged than full-grain.
